What Is Clogging Your Toilet?

Other than the obvious reason for a clogged toilet, there may be other reasons you can't get the commode to cooperate:

  • Too much toilet paper was flushed
  • Something unflushable was flushed like an object or toy
  • The drain line is clogged inside or outside (sewer problems, tree roots, etc.)
  • There's a blockage in another water line in the house
  • The septic is slow
  • Low pressure from low-flow or low-flush toilet
  • Broken parts such as the flapper or trap

How to Unclog a Toilet Using a Plunger

We’ve all come face-to-face with a clogged toilet at some point in our lives, and if you have not yet, you will. Before calling a professional plumber, try to unclog the toilet yourself with a plunger. Below is a step-by-step guide to unclogging your toilet using a plunger:

  1. Make sure there is standing water in the toilet bowl. If there is not, pour a cup of water in it. You need something to work with! The idea scenario is to have enough water so that you can submerge the head of the plunder. However, enough water to submerge the rim of the plunger will do as well.
  2. Lower the plunger into the toilet bowl. Direct the plunger so the head is covering the drain hole that takes waste away from your toilet, and your pipes. The plunger head should have a good amount of water under it.
  3. Grip the plunger handle with both hands, and push down forcefully. Continually doing this, pushing the plunger down hard and allowing it to come back up. Repeat this process 6-7 times, or until all of the water from the toilet bowl empties.
  4. Now, it is time to flush the toilet. If you flush the toilet and the water goes down normally, you are in the clear. However, if you flush the toilet and it begins to overflow, reach into the tank and shut the water off. This will stop the toilet from refilling and overflowing.

If this does not work, you may want to contact a professional. This may be a sign that there is a much larger problem at hand, and it is better to get the issue fixed as soon as possible then sit and wait, allowing it to cause further damage to your plumbing system.

4 Ways to Unclog a Toilet Without a Plunger

  1. Hot water: Pour hot water into the bowl to help break up clogs.
  2. Wire hanger: Straighten it out and use it to push through or pull out whatever obstructs the toilet.
  3. Dish soap: Pour a cup into the bowl and let it sit for a few hours, then follow up with more hot water.
  4. Vinegar and baking soda: Mix a cup of vinegar and baking soda, then pour it down the drain. Let it sit for an hour before flushing it with hot water.

If none of these methods work, it may be time to call a professional. Contact Texas Green Plumbing to get the job done quickly and efficiently. Give us a call today!

Using a Closet Auger to Unclog a Toilet

Using a closet auger to unclog toilet is also an easy project. Again this is something that you can try to do at home to save some money. But, if you can’t get it, please call us.

Knowing When to Call a Professional

When your toilet gets clogged, do not reach for the phone just yet. The best thing to do to save both money and time is to try to plunge and unclog your toilet yourself, using the methods above. However, if this does not work, you may want to call a professional plumber. Oftentimes this may signify that there is a larger problem why your toilet is clogged, so it is better to be safe than sorry.

Could not have had a better experience with Texas Green Plumbing. Eli and Terry came out to look at an issue we were having with a sink/faucet. Literally the nicest people and we will definitely be requesting them specifically from now on. We have never had a negative experience with this company and would recommend them to anyone.

Amber was amazing and helpful setting me up, the Techs (Kyle & Josh) were very professional, and importantly the fees cost/labor were much more reasonable compared to others I have spoken to.

    Highly recommend!

Awesome response time. I called them one morning due to a backed up shower drain causing that occurred the day we were scheduled to leave on vacation and they were able to get someone available within hours so we didn’t have to cancel our plans.

This is a great company to use. They worked around my schedule as I work from home. The plumber communicated with us what he did and he was super professional. Unfortunately I did not get his name, but he was awesome. Also, a shoutout to Amber at the office. She is so kind. She called me letting me know when they were coming and answered my questions when I called in.

Aaron and Michael did a fantastic job and were very professional! The team did a bang up job explaining the process and why the solution they recommended was the best choice. They were efficient and worked diligently to get the job done and minimize water being turned off to the house. Thank you!

I had 2 sinks with drainage problems in my new home. Upstairs bathroom sink just needed the seal reset. The kitchen sink had several leaks and they gave me several options for repairs at each point. They also figured out the drainage problem as being a grease clog. I have several fans set up to help deal with the smell, but now the sink drains and there are no more leaks!

We have used Texas Green Plumbing in the past to fix our hot water heaters and they were fantastic. The entire process took less than 15 minutes. He saved me so much time and money!

I went on YouTube to see if I can get an understanding of why there could be water in my outside meter box and found a video by Mr. Roger. The City said it was my responsibility so I decided to call TGP the next day. Amber and Aaron were polite and professional. The leak was fixed just in time before all the rain we received this week. The cost seemed reasonable. Thank you so much.
