How To Change The Fill Valve On A Toilet
If a toilet wont stop running or the tank is leaking onto the floor, you might need to change the fill valve. The fill valve controls the water refilling the toilet after being flushed. It can go bad, causing it to need to be replaced.
Changing the fill valve is easy to learn. It can save money if you don’t have to call a plumber.
These steps explain how to change the fill valve and save money on a plumber. The process is also explained in this video:
The first step is to turn off the water. The fill valve controls the water inside the toilet.
Once the water is off, flush it to make sure there is no water in the tank.
Next, make sure theres no water coming into the tank by cycling the fill valve.
If no water is coming into the tank, soak up the extra water. This can be done with a towel or sponge.
Now that all the water is gone, detach the supply line.
Next, holding the top of the fill valve, use a wrench to loosen the nut under the tank. Remove the nut once it is loosened.
When the nut is removed, take out the fill valve. Make sure there are towels down incase any extra water spills out.
Adjust the height of the new fill valve to where the assembly is above the overflow tube. Once it is at the right height, lock it in.
Once the new fill valve is locked in, place it back in the tank. Make sure to turn it so it doesn’t interfere with the handle or overflow.
Now it’s time to put the nut back on. Turn the nut until it’s snug, then turn it another quarter inch using the wrench. Check that the fill valve won’t move and plug the fill tube in.
Next, put the supply line back on. This can be done without a wrench.
Finally, the water can be turned back on. Check that the water in the tank rises to the right level.
Following these steps to change the fill valve will save money by keeping you from having to call a plumber.
